How it Works
Static Analysis
Static Analysis identifies potential source code, typically used in malicious attacks. This phase of the scan identifies problems using signature rules. Static Analysis is able to identify:
- Encoded JavaScript — URL encoded JavaScript that is used to obfuscate the JavaScript content.
- Document.writes with obfuscation — The document.write method is used to dynamically generate content in a web browser. Obfuscation functions are used by malware authors to disguise their content.
- Web Bugs — Small snippet of code used for the purpose of tracking a user's path through a web site.
- Vulnerable Control Instantiation — Attempts to call a control that has known vulnerabilities.
- Character encoding inside of inline frames — Iframes which load an external source inside of the current window. Malicious software often encodes this content to obfuscate what it is doing.
Behavioral Analysis
This approach identifies malware based on a web sites behavior. Instead of looking for static strings, behavioral analysis identifies malicious behavior that occurs upon visiting the site with an un-patched browser and operating system.
